STAR brings back ULTRASPRINT - One Mile, Flat Out

Sunday March 14th, 2010 -  4:30 PM on the UVI field

Some will remember a once a very popular footrace on St Thomas, ULTRASPRINT, which has been returned to the race calendar of the St Thomas Association of Roadrunners for 2010. The 1 mile event will take place on March 14th after being off STAR’s schedule for over a decade.  The first of several heats will start promptly at 4:30 PM on the UVI field. Registration will close at 4:15 PM.

Depending on enrollment in several age groups, ULTRASPRINT would run in up to five heats. STAR is planning for the following age groups:
12 and younger /   13-17  /   18-39  / 40-55 /   56 & over.

Heats for some of these age groups may be combined. Actual age group awards will depend on having at least three persons of each age in the group. First place in each age/gender group will receive a trophy. Second and third place finishers will receive ribbons.

In February 1983 the first ULTRASPRINT was run right down the east-bound lanes of Veterans’ Drive from Addelita Cancryn to Riise’s Alley.  The event drew dozens of runners of all ages but was discontinued on that course as getting permission to use the waterfront became difficult.

Entrants are advised that running a fast mile is very strenuous under the heat and humidity conditions that exist at 4:30 in the afternoon. Entrants should be conditioned runners and should modify their pace to consider the heat and humidity on race day.

Registration will take place starting at 3:15 PM.  Registration fees are $1 for youth 17 and younger and $3 for everyone else. Consent statements must be signed by parents or guardians of minors. School athletes are asked to register in advance through their coaches.

Results of the Kwanzaa Run, December 27, 2009

On Kujichagulia, the second day of Kwanzaa, visitors from New York and from the Baltimore area joined local runners for the second year of the resurrected Kwanzaa Run. Started in 1982, the event had been discontinued for a few years but was restarted last year. The 7 kilometer event commemorates the seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. The principle of Kujichagulia promotes self-determination.

Although the courses were somewhat changed this year, both the men’s and the women’s sections of Sunday’s 7 kilometer Kwanzaa Run resulted in times faster than in last year’s event. Throughout the race, perennial local champion Ruth Ann David and leading male Thomas Lay exchanged the lead several times, both well ahead of the other runners. Lay prevailed in 30:07 more than a minute better than last year’s winning time. David finished only 20 seconds behind, a full eight minutes ahead of the rest of the women’s field and almost 7 minutes quicker than last year’s leading female. Second for the males was Steve Laplace, who finished in 35:49 while Brad Kappel finished third in 36:08. For the women, Melissa King finished second in 38:23 and Lisa Parfit took third in 39:18. In the two-miler, Marjorie Wax walked alone to achieve a time of 36:07.

Proceeds from the races will go to the Rwanda Project-USVI. STAR’s next event is the Martin Luther King 5 kilometer run that will start from Vitraco Park at 7:15 AM on January 17, 2010.
